About the Elements

A 3D DNA molecule

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is an organic compound due to its fundamental molecular structure. It consists of a long chain of nucleotides, with each nucleotide composed of three key organic components: a phosphate group (containing phosphorus and oxygen atoms), a deoxyribose sugar (a five-carbon organic molecule), and a nitrogenous base (adenine, thymine, cytosine, or guanine). These organic constituents are interconnected by covalent bonds, forming a double-helix structure. This intricate arrangement of organic molecules enables DNA to store and transmit genetic information in living organisms. DNA's organic nature, based on carbon atoms forming the backbone and other organic components, underscores its crucial role in the biochemistry of life.
